Adoption Reunion Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take for a search and reunion?

Each case has its own unique characteristics and the length of time involved is partially dependant on how much information the client is able to provide up front.  Within two business days of completing the necessary agreements and your providing us with background information, we will assign your case and the process will begin.  We will move as quickly as possible. The investigation could take a few weeks or several months, but on average the search and contact is completed within about 45 days. There is no guarantee on how long it will take.

How much does it cost?

The cost of a search and reunion varies greatly and depends upon difficulty of the search, the amount of information that can be provided by the client, and a number of other factors. A personalized quote is prepared for every adoption reunion.

Your personalized quote will include fees for records, travel, consulting fees, long distance telephone calls, postage and other expenses that are typically incurred during the search phase of the reunion process.

We may require all or a portion of the fee up front.  Payment in full is required before we make contact or otherwise provide you with identifying information.

What information do I need to have before you can start the search and reunion process?

We will start with a brief phone interview, to find out what research you may have done on your own, and to get a baseline for what services we believe you will need.

To protect you and ourselves, Ed Laing Investigations, LLC will  prepare  a written agreement outlining the services we intend to provide.

We may then conduct a more detailed phone interview with you, to gather as much up front information as possible.  We will ask you to tell us everything may know about your birth parents, grandparents and siblings.  We will  ask where you were born (city, state, hospital, etc), date of birth. Based on what you already know, we will probe further.  You may know more than you thought you did!

If you have copies of legal documents, birth certificate, letters, etc, we will ask you to mail those to us (if you are local to Jacksonville, we may pick them up).
